I wish this plane would go West

March 14th,. 2006

My adventure is coming to an end. I’m having a little trouble dealing with the fact that I could be on my way back to the States right now. Safe and sound with no drama to speak of. Why did I decide to stay again? Sometimes I could kick myself!

We wrapped up our stay at Nanuya with a Village visit. The village was interesting. The villagers live on such a meager existence, but they seem entirely happy. Maybe they have it figured out! The kids were cute. The sad thing is that Fijian women are not treated very nicely. Rape and abuse are common and an attacker can repent from a rape simply by offering the girl’s father an apology. Seriously. Fijian women are allowed to talk to Western women in the context of selling to them, but other associations are not allowed as Western women are seen to be a negative influence on Fijian women. How sad. I’d like to slip them some sort of help, but I have to keep in mind that my Western beliefs don’t always translate into reality in the rest of the world.

My last night in Fiji was uneventful. I stayed at a hotel close to the airport and talked to a nice businessman over dinner. The people you meet when traveling are so interesting. We talked about politics, religion, traveling, and natural disasters. Best of all, this guy was just nice. He wasn’t hitting on me or being creepy at all.
