Pam left for New Zealand this morning, so I put on my independent traveler hat and headed out on my own this morning. First, I cancelled my outdoor tour of the Grampians, which would put me on a bus for an excessively long time and would also put me in the sun. Given the condition of my sunburn, neither option sounded like a good idea. I was also a bit sick of tours and wanted to explore Melbourne a bit.
First stop – Yarra River cafĂ© for brekkie (as they like to call it here). For the first time in over a week, I enjoyed yogurt, granola, and fruit. I might keel over if I can’t find this in Hong Kong. Next up, I walked along the river to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. I thought I would learn a bit about cricket and, hopefully, catch some boys with soccer legs hanging around. Neither happened, but Harry, my 150 year old tour guide, entertained our group for the next hour. The MCG is going through a reconstruction, so Harry mostly told us what we could see if we came another time. Thanks Harry. Harry forbid pictures of him talking, so you’ll just have to imagine. He was delightful and such a cutie.
Next stop – Fitzroy – the Haight Ashbury of Melbourne. The area was filled with funky cafes and artsy types. I enjoyed the Turkish Pide (really just a regular old sandwich). I then spent the rest of the afternoon looking for souvenirs. I know that finding souvenirs sounds easy to do, but I’m really picky and struggled to find exactly what I wanted.
